At some point self-confidence was re-packaged as narcissism and the selfie was posited as a key indicator of a personality disorder. Instead of being a symbol of wealth or power, it has become shameful to love your own image.
We see those who use the self-facing camera as
damaged,
attention-seeking,
inward-looking.
We preach the self-esteem message but then seek to deflate those who show too much.
